The Mississippi Department of Education will hold a series of meetings across the state from Sept. 8 through Sept. 28 to help parents of kindergarten through third-grade students prepare to meet state literacy standards, the department said.
The department said parents may attend any meeting regardless of their child’s home district so they can choose a time and location that best fits their schedules.
Officials said attendees will receive a synopsis of requirements under the Literacy-Based Promotion Act, passed in 2013, which aims to provide support and intervention to help students reach literacy goals before fourth grade. The department said families will also be given home-based strategies to strengthen children’s literacy skills.
Each meeting will begin at 6 p.m. and last about an hour, the department said. Meetings are scheduled at the following locations: Sept. 8 — Cleveland, D.M. Smith Elementary; Sept. 10 — Jackson, Shirley Elementary; Sept. 10 — Moss Point, Family Education Center; Sept. 16 — Laurel, Nora Davis Elementary; Sept. 17 — Long Beach, Harper McCaughan Elementary School; Sept. 17 — Columbus, Brandon Central Office Boardroom; Sept. 22 — Jackson, Boyd Elementary; and Sept. 28 — Horn Lake, Horn Lake Intermediate, the department said.
