Mississippi agriculture commissioner urges suspension of 24-cent state fuel tax through year-end
Mississippi Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson renewed his call for state lawmakers to suspend the state’s 24 cents-per-gallon fuel tax through the end of the year, Gipson said.
The request follows an announcement from the IRS that it would temporarily waive penalties for using red-dye diesel on public highways. That relief runs through Dec. 31 but does not necessarily eliminate the underlying federal tax, the announcement said.
Gipson said most Mississippi drivers won’t benefit from the federal action and are still paying 24 cents per gallon in state fuel taxes.
