The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for Mississippi, warning of dangerous conditions this week. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-to-upper 90s, with heat indices climbing to between 105 and 115 degrees, making it feel well into the triple digits.
On Sunday and Monday, much of the state is under an elevated risk (Level 2 of 5), while the northwestern corner, including Southaven, Tunica, Clarksdale, and Cleveland, faces a significant risk (Level 3 of 5). The NWS warns prolonged outdoor activity could become hazardous during this period.
The dangerous heat is expected to persist through Tuesday and Wednesday, with a broader area under a significant risk and the rest of Mississippi under an elevated risk. Heat advisories are in effect daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to the NWS.
Officials urge residents to recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. They also remind people never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles and to stay hydrated while outdoors. The NWS recommends staying updated on local forecasts for the latest information.
