Mississippi governor to set date for Hinds County special election after judge’s ruling

A judge has voided the original date for a special election in Hinds County, Mississippi, leaving the timing uncertain. The election was scheduled for July 14 to determine the successor to District 2 Supervisor, following a legal challenge.

Special Judge Barry Ford issued an amendment Thursday, stating that the election date was invalid and that Gov. Tate Reeves must set a new date under Mississippi law. The law requires the governor or lieutenant governor to call a special election for the office involved.

Ford expressed hope that Reeves would keep the original July 14 date, which had been set by the Hinds County Election Commission. The original election was prompted by a lawsuit from David Archie, the incumbent who lost to Anthony
