Mississippi law enforcement agencies arrested 61 individuals during a two-week child exploitation crackdown, officials announced Thursday. The operation, called Operation Muddy Waters, involved federal, state, and local agencies working together to combat online crimes against children.
Authorities said 13 people were taken into custody on charges related to child exploitation, while 48 others were absconders from sex offender registries. The operation also led to the seizure of more than 50 electronic devices, the execution of eight search warrants, and the securing of three immigration detainers.
“Those who choose to hide behind a computer screen to exploit children will not remain hidden,” said Homeland Security Investigations Assistant Special Agent in Charge Matt Reidell. “Operation Muddy Waters demonstrates HSI’s unwavering commitment to protecting children, supporting victims, and holding offenders accountable.”
Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch emphasized the law enforcement effort, stating, “If you exploit a child, traffic a child, or prey on the most vulnerable among us, we will use every lawful tool available to identify you, arrest you, prosecute you, and seek the toughest sentence the law permits.”
The operation took place from July 20 to July 31 and included a sex offender compliance check. Participating agencies included local police departments, sheriff’s offices, the FBI, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, among others.
