Mississippi Senator Hyde-Smith criticizes Democrat challenger, highlights Trump support in re-election bid

U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi spoke openly about her re-election campaign during her first comprehensive interview of the midterm cycle, calling her Democrat opponent a socialist and criticizing his policies.

The incumbent Republican faces two challengers in November: Democrat Scott Colom and independent Ty Pinkins. Hyde-Smith emphasized her experience, noting her deep agricultural roots in central Mississippi and her history of winning statewide races, including her appointment to the U.S. Senate in 2018.

Hyde-Smith highlighted her past electoral success, including victories in the 2015 and 2020 elections, and dismissed recent attacks from her primary challenger, Sarah Adlakha, which she said she easily countered with nearly 81% of the vote. She described Colom as a “great concern,” calling him a “dangerous character” and criticizing his political positions and background, including his failed federal judge nomination.

She also criticized Colom’s support for progressive policies, including his stance on transgender issues, which Hyde-Smith characterized as extreme. Colom, a district attorney, has denied supporting gender-affirming surgeries for minors and dismissed Hyde-Smith’s claims as false.

Hyde-Smith accused Colom of campaign lies, citing a staged video in which he appeared to call her on day one of his campaign. She described it as a “creepy” and “bizarre” stunt that exemplified what she called his dishonest campaign tactics.
