Mississippi’s Daniel Stallworth advances to ‘American Idol’ top 9

Daniel Stallworth, an elementary music teacher from Moss Point, Mississippi, has made it into the top 9 of “American Idol.” The contestant survived two rounds of eliminations last week before performing live Monday night.

Stallworth performed Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” during the episode, which focused on songs from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. It marked his first time tackling a 1980s song on the show since performing Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long” in March.

Richie, one of the judges, expressed enthusiasm for Stallworth’s performance, saying he successfully put his own spin on the hit. Fellow judges Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan also praised the rendition. Underwood called it “awesome,” while Bryan told Stallworth to “keep being you” and praised his magic.

Richie added, “Way to take Bon Jovi to church!” Despite being considered more soulful, Stallworth’s affinity for classic rock has served him well during the competition. His audition included Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’,” a song that has become a mantra for him.

Throughout the competition, Stallworth has performed songs like “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King, “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus, “Brighter Days” by Blessing Offor, and “It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over” by Lenny Kravitz. Fans have supported him by controlling the vote, sending him into the next round in the past three episodes.

With his advancement, Stallworth becomes the fourth Mississippian to reach the top 9 over the past four seasons. Previous Mississippians include Colin Stough and Zachariah Smith, who made it to the top 5 in season 21, and Jamal Roberts from Meridian, who won season 23.

“American Idol” returns Monday, April 20, at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC. The show’s theme will be “Disney Night,” with contestants singing iconic Disney hits. Two contestants will be eliminated at the end of the episode.
