Ole Miss sweeps LSU; Mississippi State and Southern Miss falter

No. 25 Ole Miss swept No. 24 LSU in a three-game series that included a viral fan altercation that led to an arrest, according to game and news reports. The sweep left Ole Miss 26-11 overall and 8-7 in the Southeastern Conference, the reports said.

Ole Miss won the opener 6-3, rolled to a 12-2 run-rule victory on Saturday and closed the series with an 8-7 victory on Sunday after LSU rallied to tie the game in the seventh, according to game accounts. The series was marked by momentum swings and late drama, the reports said.

Pitching performances helped fuel the sweep, according to box scores. Hunter Elliott struck out eight over six innings in one outing, Walker Hooks (3-0) fanned three in three innings on Friday, Cade Townsend (3-1) had eight strikeouts and allowed two runs in six innings on Saturday, and Hudson Calhoun (3-2) was credited with the Sunday win after starter Taylor Rabe struck out five in six innings. The Golden Eagles won the opener 8-1, lost 8-4 on Saturday and fell in the rubber match. Grayden Harris (6-1) recorded 10 strikeouts and allowed one run in six innings in Friday’s win, and Davis Gillespie led the offense with four hits, a home run and three RBIs, the box scores show.

According to team schedules, Ole Miss and Southern Miss are set to meet at Trustmark Park on Tuesday night. Mississippi State will play a midweek game at Samford in Birmingham. Over the weekend, Ole Miss travels to Tennessee, Mississippi State visits South Carolina and Southern Miss hosts Texas State, the schedules indicate.
