Red Flag Warnings Oct. 16–17 as strong winds, low humidity raise wildfire risk across Mississippi

Red Flag Warnings are in effect across Mississippi Friday, Oct. 16, 2026, and Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, as strong winds, low humidity and dry vegetation are creating dangerous fire conditions that can cause fires to spread quickly.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said Oct. 16, 2026, on Facebook that a strong cold front moving through the state will bring northwest winds gusting between 25 and 35 mph, contributing to the heightened risk.

MEMA listed the following precautions to help prevent wildfires:

  • Follow local burn bans and restrictions.
  • Avoid outdoor burning.
  • Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks.
  • Dispose of cigarettes properly.

MEMA advised residents to take extra precautions while the Red Flag Warnings are in effect.
