Rory McIlroy wins back-to-back Masters titles, joins elite company
Augusta, Ga. — Rory McIlroy secured his second straight Masters title Sunday, joining an exclusive group of golfers who have won back-to-back green jackets. McIlroy finished with a 1-under 71 to finish at 12-under 276, one stroke ahead of Scottie Scheffler.
The Northern Irish golfer took control on the back nine with a bold shot over Rae’s Creek for a birdie on the par-3 12th and a long drive on the 13th that set up another birdie. He maintained his lead despite several challenging moments, including a tricky shot over the 16th green and a wild drive on the 18th that resulted in a bogey.
McIlroy’s victory marks his sixth major title and his second at the Masters. His win also makes him only the fourth player to win multiple Masters, joining Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods. The golfer expressed joy at adding a second green jacket, saying, “I just can’t believe I waited 17 years to get one, and now I have two.”
Justin Rose, who led much of the final round, fell behind after struggles at Amen Corner, ultimately finishing third. Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked player, finished as runner-up and became the first since 1942 to go bogey-free on the weekend at Augusta, ending with a 65-68 weekend.
McIlroy’s victory concludes a weekend of dramatic shifts in momentum. Rose, attempting to become the second-oldest Masters champion, briefly led before falling back. Scheffler, who had a chance for a record-breaking comeback, settled for second place after a steady final round. The win cements McIlroy’s status among golf’s elite, with his sixth major title putting him within one of tying Harry Vardon for most majors by a European.
