Storm with multiple tornadoes damages hundreds of homes in Mississippi
Multiple tornadoes touched down across three counties in Mississippi Wednesday night, causing injuries and extensive property damage, according to officials.
Gov. Tate Reeves posted on social media that the storm damaged 275 homes in Lamar County, 200 in Lincoln County, and 12 in Lawrence County. About 50 apartment units in Lamar County also sustained damage. As of Thursday morning, 17 injuries had been reported across the state.
Roads in the affected areas are blocked by downed trees and power lines. Crews have been dispatched to clear debris and restore safety. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is assisting with damage assessments, while the American Red Cross and Cajun Navy are providing support to residents, including shelter and supplies.
More than 15,000 homes are without power. Reeves said the state is deploying additional resources as requested by local emergency managers. Several roads remain closed, including U.S. 51 in Lincoln County, State Route 184 in Lawrence County, and portions of State Route 583 in Lincoln County.
Motorists are advised to avoid these areas and exercise caution due to ongoing debris removal efforts. Crews continue working to clear roads and ensure safety for travelers.
