USDA awards $10 million to expand Leland Medical Clinic in Mississippi Delta

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded a $10 million grant to support the expansion of Leland Medical Clinic in Mississippi. The nonprofit Delta Health Alliance, which owns and operates the clinic, announced the project aims to improve healthcare access in the rural Delta region.

The expanded facility is set to open Thursday and will offer new services, including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and dentistry. The clinic serves more than 2,400 patients across Bolivar, Sharkey, Sunflower, and Washington counties, as well as neighboring areas.

Delta Health Alliance CEO Dr. Karen Matthews said the expansion marks a significant milestone. She added that the new services will reduce the need for residents to travel long distances to cities like Jackson and Memphis for care.

Since opening in 2013, the clinic has added digital X-rays, mammograms, a mobile health unit, and the Delta Wellness Center, which provides fitness and nutrition programs. It is recognized as a Federally Qualified Health Center.

Dane Maxwell, Mississippi director for USDA Rural Development, said the agency is proud to support projects that foster economic growth and healthcare in rural communities. “Projects like this are at the core of Rural Development’s mission,” Maxwell said.
