Jacob Coxon publicly resigned from his position as an Anthropic researcher on Tuesday, accusing the company and rival developer OpenAI of “gambling with our lives,” he told Jo Ling Kent.
In an interview with Kent, Coxon said he stepped down because he fears the current pace of AI development could one day threaten humanity. He described the competition between developers as reckless, according to the interview.
Coxon specifically accused Anthropic and OpenAI — the maker of ChatGPT — of racing to develop increasingly advanced models. He said that race, in his view, places people at risk.
Coxon spoke with Jo Ling Kent about his decision to resign and his concerns about the future of artificial intelligence, telling her why he believes the technology could pose an existential threat.
