France will face Spain in the opening semifinal of the expanded World Cup, FIFA said.
FIFA said the tournament’s expansion allowed it to introduce a new seeding system that placed the world’s top teams in opposite corners of the knockout bracket.
That arrangement, FIFA said, set up two heavyweight semifinal matchups rather than concentrating top teams in a single side of the bracket.
