Federal prosecutors have charged a Google employee with insider trading involving Polymarket, a blockchain-based prediction platform. The Department of Justice filed a seven-page complaint in federal court in the Southern District of New York.
The complaint accuses Michele Spagnuolo, 36, a software engineer at Google, of using confidential, nonpublic data from Google’s internal systems. The DOJ alleges that he exploited his access to such information for personal gain on Polymarket.
The complaint details that Spagnuolo accessed sensitive data related to Google’s annual performance and internal projects. Prosecutors say he used this information to inform trades on the platform, violating securities laws and company policies.
Spagnuolo’s attorney has not commented on the charges. The case highlights ongoing concerns about insider trading and data security in the tech industry, authorities said.
