Graham Platner ends Senate bid after rape allegation

Graham Platner on Monday ended his bid for the U.S. Senate after an allegation of rape led top Democrats to withdraw their support, his campaign said.

Platner had been running to unseat Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. The campaign had been marked by repeated scandals, according to media reports.

The allegation prompted major Democratic figures to withhold endorsements and financial backing, effectively halting the campaign, his campaign said.

Platner’s withdrawal leaves the Maine Senate race with fewer Democratic challengers to Collins, according to the reports.
