NAACP files emergency petition to block Tennessee redistricting plan
The NAACP on Thursday filed an emergency petition seeking to block Tennessee’s attempt to remove the state’s only majority-Black congressional district, alleging the move would violate the state constitution, the organization said.
The petition was filed in Davidson County Chancery Court, the NAACP said.
The filing urged Republican Gov. Bill Lee and the state legislature not to enact the new redistricting plan, the NAACP said.
The organization told the court the proposed changes would eliminate the state’s only majority-Black congressional district and amount to a constitutional violation, the filing said.
