Rising consumer, fuel and housing costs put affordability pressure on U.S. voters, Fox News reports

Consumer prices, higher fuel costs and elevated home prices are creating affordability pressures for U.S. voters as they head to midterm elections, Fox News reported on Nov. 3, 2026.

Fox News cited the latest inflation report showing the Consumer Price Index rose 3.7% over the year through September and 0.6% from August.

Higher energy costs were highlighted as a contributor. Fox News, citing U.S. Energy Information Administration data, said diesel prices climbed from about $3.45 per gallon in early 2025 to a peak of $6.53 in October 2026. The article also said gasoline prices jumped 9.1% in September, accounting for more than half of that month’s overall CPI increase.

Fox News reported a New York Federal Reserve study finding that tariffs implemented under President Trump added roughly 2.9 percentage points to prices for the consumer goods the researchers examined, with about one-third of the increase coming from U.S.-made products.

Housing costs were noted as a major affordability challenge. Fox News cited Freddie Mac data showing the average 30-year mortgage rate at 7.24% as of Oct. 29, 2026, and National Association of Realtors figures showing the latest median price for an existing home at $417,500 in September.

The Fox News article said rising home values can benefit current homeowners but make buying or renting more difficult for others and added that charts illustrating these trends cannot by themselves show how voters will weigh the economy or which party they will hold responsible.
