Walnut Sweet Treats on Main Draws Crowd on Halloween

Walnut’s 2nd Annual Sweet Treats on Main turned the town’s Main Street into a Halloween block party on Saturday night, Oct. 31. Families packed downtown for costumes, decorated trunks, candy and a candy drop from an excavator, and town leaders are calling it a “spooktacular success.”

“WOW, WALNUT!! Y’all really showed up and showed out,” the Town of Walnut wrote on its official Facebook page on Monday as it shared the first batch of photos from the night.

Sweet Treats on Main by the numbers

The town has posted more than 95 photos from the evening in two albums: an 80-photo set followed by a 17-photo “Part 2.” The town is encouraging residents to look through them and tag friends and neighbors they spot in costume.

According to the town’s flyer, the free event included:

  • Trunks, tents and tables set up by local businesses, churches, families and community members
  • Free food and drinks
  • Plenty of candy for trick-or-treaters
  • A candy drop at 7 p.m. from a mini excavator bucket
  • A “big community announcement” about something new coming to Walnut

The fun started at 6 p.m. and wrapped up around 8 p.m., the town told residents ahead of the event. Main Street was closed to traffic from Highway 354, and those setting up booths were asked to enter on Mitchell Street.

Thank-yous to sponsors and volunteers

The town gave a “HUGE THANK YOU” to everyone who set up a trunk or table, donated candy and volunteered. “We couldn’t do it without our amazing community!” the post said.

The town also singled out SJ Property Investments LLC and J&W Electrical and Plumbing for “making it RAIN CANDY” during the candy drop, and it posted a separate thank-you to Pepsi.

Some people who set up booths said in the comments that they are already planning to come back. Others who missed it said they hope to make it next year.

The big announcement

The community announcement promised on the flyer came the next day. The town shared that SJ Property Investments LLC is bringing a new commercial development to Walnut, with a rendering of a row of storefronts. The town said the business names in that drawing are for illustration only. Read more in our story on the planned Walnut commercial development.

A growing downtown tradition

Sweet Treats on Main is one of several events the town has used this year to bring people back to Main Street. They include a fall movie night that drew a large crowd downtown. With two years of Sweet Treats on Main in the books, the Halloween night event is fast becoming a Walnut tradition.
