President Donald Trump delivered a more restrained speech Friday at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner, after an armed man attempted to assassinate him at the event in April. Trump focused on themes of unity and gratitude, although he still made pointed comments about the press and political opponents.
Trump replaced his original, more combative speech with one that praised the Secret Service and emphasized resilience. He thanked agents for their protection during the attack and other daily duties. The president also joked about seeking a third term and joked about the crowd’s dinner, saying, “I hope everyone enjoyed their beef tenderloins.”
The event marked Trump’s return to the dinner just months after Cole Allen, the suspect in the shooting, was detained. Allen has been indicted on four charges, including attempting to assassinate the president. Court documents reveal Allen sent a manifesto before the attack, citing political motives.
During his speech, Trump criticized Democratic figures such as California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker. He also mocked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and joked about sending him a Palestinian outfit. Trump called for congressional term limits and made lighthearted remarks about politicians’ personal lives.
The president praised Secret Service Officer Victor Gonzales, who was recognized for stopping Allen from entering the ballroom. Gonzales acted despite gunfire that struck his protective vest, exemplifying courage and dedication, according to Weijia Jiang, a former WHCA president.
Trump also addressed the ongoing $200 million renovation of the White House Ballroom, which faced lawsuits. He expressed confidence the space would host future dinners, promising to return next year despite some joking hesitations. He concluded by announcing his intention to run for president again in 2028, sporting a red “TRUMP 2028” hat.
