Two people were killed and five others injured Sunday evening during a shooting at the Seattle Center, according to authorities. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson called the incident “an act of horrific violence.”
Wilson said in a statement that impacted families are going through their worst moments and expressed concern about the community’s sense of safety. “No one should have to weigh the risk of being shot before attending an event or gathering,” she said.
Police and emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after 6 p.m. The shooting occurred during the Bite of Seattle food festival, which was taking place at the time. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area.
The Seattle Fire Department confirmed two victims died at the scene after efforts to save them. Three others, including a 2-year-old, were taken to hospitals in stable condition. A fourth victim was transported in serious condition, and a fifth with minor injuries declined treatment, police said.
Witnesses described chaos as people fled the scene. Kayla Carris, 22, said she was sitting outside the Armory when she heard screams and saw people running and throwing objects. Todd Behrends, 59, reported hearing multiple gunshots and witnessing people jumping over each other to escape.
Harborview Medical Center is currently on lockdown due to increased police activity. The Seattle Center Monorail has also been shut down for the rest of the day. Authorities have detained two suspects in connection with the shooting, according to police sources.
