U.S. Marine dies in training incident at Camp Schwab in Okinawa
A U.S. Marine died Nov. 3 following a training incident at Camp Schwab in Okinawa, Japan, the 3rd Marine Division said in a statement to ABC News.
The division said it expressed its deepest condolences to the Marine’s family and that the death remains under investigation, according to the statement.
Lt. Tyler Thomas, a spokesperson for III Marine Expeditionary Force, told ABC News the Marine’s identity will be withheld until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.
Military officials have not said whether the Marine died at Camp Schwab or after being transported to a hospital, and Thomas declined to say whether anyone else was injured, the report said. Fox News Digital said it had reached out to the 3rd Marine Division for comment.
Fox News Digital reported that roughly 50,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Japan, with most based on Okinawa. The report said nearly 80,000 Americans live on Okinawa, including about 30,000 active-duty service members, with the Marine Corps accounting for the largest presence there. The Associated Press contributed to the report, the outlet said.
