Reports: tax refunds to be processed despite shutdown
Despite earlier reports and past history, the White House is stating that tax refunds will be processed despite the government shutdown.
It was announced by White House Office of Management and Budget acting director Russell Vought that the refunds will be issued. This ruling reverses previous IRS policy which had prohibited tax refunds from being paid while nearly 90% of the agency’s staff was sent home during a shutdown.
W-2’s are starting to come in for lots of employers and early filers are preparing their documents, according to local tax preparation companies.
This does not affect the timing of refunds involving the Earned Income or Additional child tax credit, which will be processed near the end of February.
