Tippah County roundup, Oct. 17, 2026: Dateline revisits Carpenter case; local districts earn B grades

The Tippah County murder case involving Kirby Carpenter reached a national television audience Friday, Oct. 16, when NBC’s Dateline aired “The Betrayal of Kirby Carpenter.” The episode is now streaming on Peacock, according to Tippah News’ Saturday report.

Dateline episode follows Carpenter case

Carpenter, 36, was found fatally shot outside his Tippah County home on Dec. 2, 2022. Tippah News reports that Jeffrey Spence was convicted of first-degree murder in a March 2026 retrial and sentenced to life in prison after a September 2025 mistrial. The episode features correspondent Andrea Canning, members of both families, county investigators and District Attorney Ben Creekmore. The site also reports that People magazine cited its coverage in an article about the case. Read the report on the Dateline episode.

School ratings establish a new baseline

South Tippah, North Tippah and Benton County school districts each earned a B in Mississippi’s 2026 accountability ratings, based on the 2025-26 school year. Ripley High and Blue Mountain High earned A grades. The Mississippi Department of Education raised the points required for letter grades, so the results should be treated as a new baseline rather than compared directly with earlier grades, according to the site’s report citing MDE.

Among other Tippah schools, Pine Grove High and Walnut Attendance Center earned B grades; Falkner Attendance Center received a D. Chalybeate Elementary and Ripley Elementary received B grades, and Ripley Middle received a C. Read the district and school ratings.
