Mississippi College renamed Mississippi Christian University

Mississippi College, the state’s oldest institution of higher learning, officially changed its name on Monday to Mississippi Christian University, the institution announced.

“We have been rooted deeply in this state for 200 years, and we will continue to serve Mississippi by prioritizing our students, maintaining our academic focus and striving to reflect the message of Christ,” Blake Thompson, president of Mississippi Christian University, said. Thompson said the new name better illustrates the school’s Christian mission during its bicentennial year and allows continued use of the “MC” logo.

The university said Mississippi College School of Law will be renamed Mississippi Christian University School of Law but will continue to be referred to as MC Law.

University officials said the name change has been discussed for decades and will not affect academic programs, accreditation or student life on campus. The institution said it will continue to accept students of all faiths and seeks to provide an environment where believers can deepen their faith and nonbelievers can be exposed to the gospel and Christianity.

The university said applicants for staff and faculty positions will still be asked to provide a statement of faith and their denomination and place of worship preferences. It said diplomas awarded to graduates who received degrees in May will bear the previous name, while diplomas for graduates beginning this summer will show Mississippi Christian University. Previous graduates who want a diploma with the new name can order one starting July 31, 2026, the university said.
