Jackson Zoo sees surge in visitors amid renovations and new attractions

Jackson Zoo experienced a notable increase in visitors last weekend, with approximately 175 people attending, according to zoo officials. The turnout followed the reopening of the zoo’s splash pad and recent improvements aimed at revitalizing the historic west Jackson attraction.

Volunteers with the Zoo Area Progressive Partnership (ZAPP), a nonprofit led by west Jackson residents, were surprised to see families lining up at the ticket booth early Saturday morning. Heather Logan, a ZAPP board member, captured the moment on her phone as families gathered before the zoo’s doors opened at 10 a.m.

Among the new features is a bright blue splash pad, which after three years, is now open for children to enjoy. The splash pad includes a tiger tongue slide and a pelican that dumps water from its bill. Pamela D.C. Junior, director of the city’s Human and Cultural Services department, expressed excitement about the reopening.

In addition, ZAPP volunteers enhanced the zoo’s entrance with signs showcasing animals like Big Mike, a rare white rhinoceros, and installed murals painted by local artists depicting birds, trees, and magnolia flowers. The improvements are part of efforts to boost interest in the zoo, which is also the subject of potential redevelopment, though city officials have yet to accept bids from developers.

Zoo staff noted recent births, including at least 10 prairie dog pups, the only animals currently being bred at the facility. The zoo’s chimpanzees are on birth control due to their relatedness, and some older animals like ostriches are no longer breeding. Visitors, including families like the Crews, observed that the zoo looked more lively and animal-rich than during previous visits.

Ray McCants, president of ZAPP, announced plans for another family event, the Kidtrepreneur Youth Marketplace, scheduled for the following Saturday, where children will sell goods from vendor booths. Zoo officials hope these events will continue to attract visitors and foster community engagement.
