Wildcats roar past Golden Bears in season opener

Alcorn Central came out of the gates strong against Walnut on Friday night.

Luckily for the Wildcats, it’s not how you start but how you finish.

Central’s Seth Jones returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown to put Walnut on notice. The Wildcats took notice, and control of the game, from that point forward

Three Wildcats scored on the ground, Cade Hunt connected with Brandon Shields for a touchdown through the air and Walnut forced 6 turnovers as they rolled to a 41-7 victory on opening night.

“About every time I challenged the defense to go get the ball back, they answered with a recovery,” Wildcat Coach John Meeks said of his teams affinity for creating turnovers.

TJ Colom put up 214 total yards, 164 on the ground, and three touchdowns to pace the Wildcat offense.

Cade Hunt completed 5 of 15 passes on the sloppy field, including a 24 yard strike to Brandon Shields in the third quarter.

TJ Luellen rushed the ball for 42 yards and a touchdown. James Hinson and Tyler Trussell each recovered a pair of fumbles for the Wildcats as the Walnut defense held Central to just 147 total yards on the night.

Walnut is on the road at Myrtle on Friday at the first home game at Myrtle’s new field. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
