Flood Awareness Week bulletin urges residents to protect homes, consider insurance

A Flood Awareness Week bulletin said flooding already is occurring in parts of the state and additional rainfall is forecast for the week, and urged residents to take steps to protect their homes, belongings and finances.

The bulletin advised residents to review their flood risk and consider purchasing flood insurance if they live in flood-prone areas, noting that standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage.

It also recommended photographing important documents and valuable possessions before severe weather arrives and signing up for local weather alerts while monitoring trusted sources for forecasts and warnings.

The bulletin warned people to avoid flooded roads and repeated the safety message, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown,” telling motorists and pedestrians never to drive or walk through floodwaters.
