MBI investigates after Claiborne County deputy fatally shot near Hermanville

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said a Claiborne County deputy was fatally shot and a female bystander was wounded during an officer-involved shooting near Hermanville.

MBI said deputies were attempting to disperse a crowd in the parking lot of Michael Dean’s Convenience Store around midnight when gunfire was directed toward the crowd. The female bystander was shot and taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the bureau said. The deputy was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, MBI said.

MBI said agents are assessing the critical incident and collecting evidence. Upon completing the investigation, the bureau said it will share its findings with the local district attorney’s office and the attorney general’s office. The agency said the information is preliminary and subject to change.

The FBI is offering up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible, the MBI said. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office, the MBI tip line at MBITips@dps.ms.gov or the Mississippi Department of Homeland Security at 1-888-472-3367. The bureau said additional information may be provided later.
