Mississippi auditor reacts to sentencing in welfare fraud case
JACKSON, Miss. — State Auditor Shad White issued a statement Tuesday following the sentencing of Anne McGrew in a welfare fraud case. White said McGrew was the first person to be sentenced in what he called the largest public fraud scheme in Mississippi history.
White noted that prosecutors expect to sentence six other individuals who have pleaded guilty soon. He emphasized that while the court process can be slow, the recent sentencing marked a step toward justice for taxpayers who were defrauded, according to his office.
The scheme was uncovered by White’s office more than six years ago. Details about the charges or the sentences were not immediately available.
