Georgia running back Dante Dowdell hospitalized after ATV accident

Georgia football coach Kirby Smart confirmed that running back Dante Dowdell is being treated in an Atlanta hospital after an ATV accident near Picayune, Mississippi. Smart told ESPN there is no clear timeline for Dowdell’s return to play.

Dowdell, a Mississippi native, transferred to Georgia from Kentucky in the offseason. He was expected to serve as a backup to starter Nate Frazier. Last season, he rushed for 560 yards and three touchdowns on 112 carries.

Before transferring to Georgia, Dowdell played at Oregon and Nebraska. He also competed for Picayune Memorial during high school.

Smart said Dowdell is being treated at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a facility specializing in spinal cord injuries and other neuromuscular conditions. The coach added that Georgia players have visited Dowdell and the program continues to support him and his family during recovery.

Georgia’s next football season begins Sept. 5 against Tennessee State. The Bulldogs finished last season with a 39-34 loss to Ole Miss in the College Football Playoff.
