Lockhart throws for 388 yards, Jackson State routs Edward Waters 66-14

Jackson State quarterback Jared Lockhart threw for a career-high 388 yards and four touchdowns as the Tigers beat Edward Waters 66-14 on Saturday night at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, the school said.

Lockhart completed 17 of 25 passes without an interception, connecting with four different receivers for scores as Jackson State (2-0) scored 38 unanswered points in the first half, the school said. The Tigers finished with 704 yards of total offense in front of 16,726 fans.

Nate Rembert led Jackson State with four catches for 179 yards, including receptions of 53 and 51 yards, the school said. Kobe Paul had two catches for 48 yards and a touchdown, while Jency Riley Jr. and Sebastien Saint-Louis also caught touchdown passes. Jackson State totaled 316 rushing yards; Nate Blount IV led the ground attack with 67 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.

The Tigers scored on nine of their first 10 possessions and led 52-0 in the third quarter before Edward Waters (1-1), a Division II program, got on the board on a 52-yard interception return by Dylan McCarthy, according to Jackson State. Backup quarterback Caron Tyler threw the interception. Jackson State added two fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns from Li’Darious Pryor and Jartavious Smart before Edward Waters scored again on a 29-yard run by Torey Morrison, the school said.

Defensively, Jackson State limited Edward Waters to 231 yards, including 48 rushing yards on 30 attempts, and recorded four sacks and 10 tackles for loss, the school said. Swipe Marshall was named Jackson State’s defensive MVP after recording five tackles, a half-tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry, and Lockhart earned offensive MVP honors. Jackson State converted nine of 11 third downs and scored on all eight trips to the red zone. The Tigers will have a bye before returning to action Sept. 19 against Tuskegee in the W.C. Gorden Classic, the school said.
