NFL extends Roger Goodell’s contract four years through 2030 season

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell agreed to a four-year contract extension that runs through the 2030 league season and ends March 31, 2031, the league’s Compensation Committee notified team owners on Sunday, a memo obtained by The Associated Press said.

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, chairman of the Compensation Committee, told owners in the memo that the league is “very fortunate to have Roger at the helm for the next four years,” according to the memo obtained by The Associated Press.

Kraft wrote that the committee worked with an independent third-party compensation consultant and outside counsel to structure a deal “that aligns Roger’s compensation with the League’s long-term interests and success.” He said the agreement is “heavily performance based, with more than 95% of the total compensation tied to Roger’s and the NFL’s performance,” as measured against various metrics and at the discretion of the Compensation Committee, the memo said.

Financial terms of the new contract were not immediately disclosed. Previous reports said Goodell earned $63.9 million for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. The league is no longer structured as a tax-exempt trade association and has not been required to disclose his compensation on an annual basis, previous reporting said.

The extension is the fifth for the 67-year-old Goodell, who became commissioner in 2006 after succeeding Paul Tagliabue. He began his NFL career as an administrative intern in 1982 under then-Commissioner Pete Rozelle. The deal’s expiration coincides with the end of the current collective bargaining agreement in March 2031. The league has pointed to franchise sales and international growth — including a record nine international games this season — as markers of its financial strength, with reported franchise sales reaching multibillion-dollar levels in recent years.
