The Mississippi Department of Transportation is launching several projects aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving safety across the state. Two major capacity projects are in the works along Interstate 55 in Madison County and State Route 25 in Rankin County, funded by approximately $150 million approved by lawmakers earlier this year, according to MDOT Executive Director Brad White.
The I-55 project involves widening the highway to six lanes over a four-mile stretch from State Route 463 to Gluckstadt Road. The project aims to alleviate bottlenecks during peak hours. Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons said the widening will add a lane in each direction, helping to improve traffic flow in Madison County.
Similarly, the State Route 25 project will expand the roadway from Grant’s Ferry Road to SR 471 in Rankin County to six lanes. Both projects are expected to reduce delays caused by school, commuter, and truck traffic. Bids for the Madison County project will be solicited next month, with construction slated to start in spring 2027, White said. The Rankin County project will follow a similar timeline, with bidding beginning in August and contracts awarded in September.
In addition to capacity improvements, MDOT is working on safety upgrades along I-59 near Hattiesburg and I-10 along the Gulf Coast. The I-59 project, costing about $66.7 million, includes paving, ramp closures, and bridge repairs. Most paving is complete, with remaining asphalt work and bridge repairs scheduled for completion by fall. Lane closures are expected during construction.
Widening of I-10 from Diamondhead to Gulfport is also underway under a $155 million contract. The project includes installing a noise barrier at the Diamondhead exit and is on track for completion in 2027. Other ongoing projects include expanding State Route 19 in Neshoba County, replacing bridges along U.S. 80, and repairing bridges on several other routes across the state.
