U.S., Iran near deal to end war, Pakistan says
Pakistan’s prime minister said Friday that the United States and Iran have reached a final, agreed-upon text of a deal to end their conflict in the Middle East. Shehbaz Sharif added that mediators are working with both sides to finalize the agreement, which could be announced in the coming days, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
The announcement follows a week of heightened tensions, including Iran exchanging fire with the U.S. and Israel over three days. The fighting raised fears of a broader regional war. There was no immediate comment from U.S. or Iranian officials on Sharif’s statement, but Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the deal was closer than ever. U.S. President Donald Trump shared Araghchi’s post on social media, also noting progress in the negotiations.
Officials say the emerging agreement could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of Iran’s highly enriched uranium. A senior U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the deal is approximately 80% to 85% complete. The official noted that technical details on uranium removal would be worked out within 60 days after signing.
Regional sources indicated that the deal might include phased lifting of sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian assets. Amid the negotiations, Trump warned Iran to “get their act together,” before sharing the Iranian Foreign Minister’s post. The dispute over Iran’s nuclear program and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have significantly impacted global energy supplies and prices.
While Iran insists its nuclear efforts are peaceful, the U.S. and Israel remain concerned about potential weaponization. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel is not a party to the deal but expects Trump to uphold Israeli interests, including weakening Iran’s missile and proxy networks. The deal is being brokered primarily by Pakistan, with backing from regional allies, according to sources.
