Mississippi museum holds World Snake Day event Friday

The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science in Jackson will host a hands-on World Snake Day event Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the museum said. World Snake Day is officially July 16, the museum noted.

Visitors will be able to see and touch 26 snake species native to Mississippi and speak with the museum’s experts and herpetologists, the museum said. The event will include interactive exhibits and programming about how snakes benefit the environment.

Aaron Holbrook, assistant director of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, said the event is an opportunity for people who are wary of snakes to change their minds. “Snakes might not be everyone’s favorite animal, but they are truly remarkable,” Holbrook said. The museum said Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi can earn the “MDWFP Museum of Natural Science Snake Day” patch and Boy Scouts can complete requirements for the “Reptile and Amphibian Merit” badge.

The museum said admission is free for Mississippi Museum of Natural Science Foundation members. Nonmember tickets are $9 for adults, $8 for seniors 60 and older, $7 for youth ages 3-18 and free for children under age 3. Tickets are available at the museum entrance or online, the museum said.
