Mississippi puts letter, four brass coins into America250 time capsule
Mississippi contributed a letter from Gov. Tate Reeves and four brass coins to the America250 time capsule that will be buried July 4 at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, America250 said.
The capsule, which America250 said contains items from all 50 states, five territories and Washington, D.C., will be opened in 2276. America250 said the project aims to “tell the story” of the nation to future generations.
According to America250, Reeves’ letter is addressed to the people of 2276. Reeves tweeted that he was excited about the inclusion, writing, “Mississippi will see you in 2276!”
America250 said the four brass coins honor Mississippi contributions to music, science, literature and food. Images provided by America250 show one coin depicting Gulf Coast seafood; a coin with a space rocket recognizing engine testing at the Stennis Space Center; a coin showing the Crossroads in Clarksdale, where blues musician Robert Johnson is said to have sold his soul for the ability to play; and a coin showing three books bearing the names Richard Wright, William Faulkner and Eudora Welty.
America250 posted examples of other states’ submissions, noting larger states like California included items such as a letter from Gov. Gavin Newsom, a quantum computing chip and an AI-generated prediction of life in 2276, while some states, including Alabama, submitted more modest items such as poems or single letters, the organization said.
