Mississippi State, Universidad ORT Uruguay reach agreement to expand exchanges

Mississippi State University said it has reached a memorandum of understanding with Universidad ORT Uruguay to expand educational and research exchanges between the two institutions.

The agreement, Mississippi State said, aims to identify commonalities, develop cooperative endeavors and promote the exchange of educational and cultural materials. School officials said new study-abroad opportunities will be part of the partnership.

Lourdes Cardozo Gaibisso, an assistant professor of teaching English as a second language and linguistics at Mississippi State, was credited as the driving force behind the partnership, the university said. Mississippi State said her program was funded in 2025 by the university’s Global Development Seed Grant to strengthen language instruction across Mississippi and Uruguay.

Cardozo Gaibisso said, “It is important to co-create solutions and opportunities that integrate different voices, levels of expertise and skills.” Mississippi State said she provided a hybrid, seven-month in-service English for Speakers of Other Languages teacher professional development program in Uruguay and has co-authored two forthcoming publications and a conference presentation about her teaching strategies. Natalia Zambon Ferronato, co-principal investigator at Universidad ORT Uruguay, assisted in the program, and officials from both schools celebrated the new partnership, Mississippi State said.
