Dae’Quan Wright waived by Browns; has agreement to play for LSU if cleared

Former Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright was waived by the Cleveland Browns on Saturday and has an agreement to join LSU if he clears NFL waivers, according to the team and transfer portal records. Wright committed to LSU via the NCAA transfer portal on Sunday, portal records show.

Browns coach Todd Monken said during a postgame news conference that he had been contacted by LSU coach Lane Kiffin. Monken said Wright had missed some team activities last week with an injury but was medically cleared to play Saturday, remarks captured in the team’s postgame coverage.

The arrangement would reunite Wright with LSU position coach Joe Cox if the transfer is approved, according to reports. It is unclear whether Ole Miss sought to bring Wright back; first-year Ole Miss coach Pete Golding has said he is satisfied with his roster, the school said.

The transfer possibility follows a Louisiana judge’s temporary restraining order issued Aug. 19 that named 32 athletes, including Wright, allowing them to enter the transfer portal and seek a fifth year of eligibility. A preliminary injunction hearing is scheduled in Baton Rouge on Aug. 31, court filings show. The order follows a separate Colorado ruling and a subsequent U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals decision that addressed NCAA eligibility rules.

Wright spent two seasons at Ole Miss after transferring from Virginia Tech and had 39 receptions for 635 yards and five touchdowns in the 2025-26 season, according to school statistics. He went undrafted in the 2026 NFL draft, signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent and was later picked up by the Browns, team transaction records show. His agency said it is confident he will be able to play for Kiffin this season, according to representatives.
