Georgia beats Mississippi State in extra innings to reach College World Series

Georgia defeated Mississippi State in a super regional series to advance to the College World Series for the first time since 2008, ending the Bulldogs’ season. Georgia won the final game 11-9 in extra innings Sunday after a 13-12 victory Saturday.

The Bulldogs from Athens jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before Mississippi State responded. Kevin Milewski hit a two-run homer in the second inning, his third in less than 30 hours, driving in Vytas Valincius. Georgia added three more runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 7-2.

Mississippi State chipped away at the lead, with Valincius hitting a solo home run and Bryce Chance adding an RBI single in the sixth. Georgia responded with another run in the top of the seventh, making it 8-4. The Bulldogs then hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to one, with Ace Reese, Noah Sullivan, and Jacob Parker connecting on homers.

In the eighth inning, Jacob Parker hit a two-run homer with Reese on base, giving Mississippi State its first lead at 9-8. However, Brennan Hudson tied the game for Georgia with an RBI single in the ninth. Daniel Jackson then hit a two-run homer in the 10th, his 31st of the season, to give Georgia the lead for good.

Justin Byrd earned the win for Georgia, shutting down Mississippi State in the final innings. Tyler Pitzer took the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing two runs over 2.1 innings. Mississippi State finished with 43 wins, its most since 2021, while Georgia advances to Omaha for the first time since 2008.
