Ole Miss Special Olympics team wins gold at USA Games
The Ole Miss Special Olympics College Club helped Mississippi secure its first gold medal in intercollegiate flag football at the recent Special Olympics USA Games in Minneapolis, according to the university. The team included Mississippi Special Olympics athletes and Ole Miss students without intellectual disabilities, who served as partners.
Hunter Crabbs, intramural sports and sport clubs coordinator at the Department of Campus Recreation, and Molly Nichols, a senior biological sciences major, coached the team. Crabbs, who is completing a master’s degree in sport and recreation management, said this was a historic milestone for Mississippi. He became involved in unified sports after coaching bocce ball during student teaching in Pennsylvania.
The team practiced weekly through the spring semester, increasing to twice weekly during summer break. Nichols noted that the extra practice helped deepen relationships among team members. Despite losing their first two games, the team rallied to win their semifinal and final matches against Utah and Iowa, respectively, finishing with a 28-6 and 16-14 victory and earning the gold medal.
Team member Bhanu Jayaratna, of Oxford, the team’s starting quarterback, said their goal was to represent Mississippi and bring home gold. The team also formed strong bonds, with Nichols describing them as a family. Many athletes said the experience was rewarding, with some enjoying the competition and others the friendships they made.
Nichols, who calls herself the “team mom,” shared that her involvement with Special Olympics began in her freshman year and that the athletes welcomed her warmly. She emphasized the importance of leadership beyond organizing practices, highlighting encouragement and inclusion. The team’s resilience was evident as they rebounded from early losses to win the gold medal, embodying the spirit of “Hotty Toddy” as a symbol of opportunity and perseverance.
