Sean Tindell launches Republican bid for Mississippi attorney general

Sean Tindell announced Wednesday that he will seek the Republican nomination for Mississippi attorney general, his campaign said. He launched the campaign in Gulfport and began a statewide tour with stops in Jackson, Tupelo and Southaven, the campaign said.

“Mississippi needs leaders who are focused less on petty disputes and more on working together and getting things done for the people we serve,” Tindell said, according to his campaign. “That’s what I’m running for attorney general.”

Tindell has led the Mississippi Department of Public Safety since Gov. Tate Reeves appointed him in 2020, his campaign said. He previously served three years as a judge on the Mississippi Court of Appeals and represented the Gulfport area in the state Senate for five years, the campaign said.

Tindell said his legislative, judicial and agency experience make him “uniquely qualified” for the attorney general’s office. He pointed to initiatives to reduce wait times at drivers license bureaus and to shrink an autopsy backlog at the Mississippi Forensics Laboratory, the campaign said. He also said he plans to ask the Legislature to expand the offices role in public corruption cases and to speed delivery of attorney general opinions to public bodies.

Tindell said he eventually will resign as commissioner to focus on his campaign, though he gave no timetable for that move, his campaign said. The attorney general seat will be open because incumbent Lynn Fitch is running for governor, Mississippi Today reported. Tindell is the only candidate so far to formally announce for attorney general, and Mississippi Today quoted GOP strategist Henry Barbour as saying state Sen. Briggs Hopson plans to enter the race, Mississippi Today reported. Mississippi Today also compiled a list of other candidates who have announced statewide bids for 2027, including Fitch, Andy Gipson and Philip Gunn for governor.
