Senate approves Hyde-Smith, Warnock resolution for Gold Star Families Remembrance Week
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Senate late Thursday approved a bipartisan resolution introduced by U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) and U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) formally designating Gold Star Families Remembrance Week to honor the families of fallen American servicemembers.
S.Res.904, approved by unanimous consent, sets aside Sept. 20-27 as Gold Star Remembrance Week to recognize the sacrifices made by the families of U.S. military servicemembers who gave their lives in defense of the nation.
“Every Gold Star family I meet shows great patriotism and resolve as they deal with the loss of a loved one who died in service to our nation,” Hyde-Smith said. “Their sacrifices are why the nation takes time to not only honor them, but to reaffirm our commitments to them and the memory of our fallen heroes.”
“When America’s bravest answer the call to serve, their entire family joins the mission,” Warnock said. “Every day, Gold Star Families embody courage and grace in the face of devastating loss, and their personal sacrifice to our country cannot go unrecognized.”
The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) is among the veterans’ organizations supporting the annual resolution. Hyde-Smith met Wednesday with several TAPS Gold Star families ahead of the Senate’s vote, and committed to pressing for legislation she supports — including the Love Lives on Act (S.410) to protect survivor benefits and the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act (S.4744), a comprehensive bicameral bill to improve benefits for veterans, their families, caregivers and survivors.
The observance follows Gold Star Mother’s Day, commemorated by presidential proclamation since 1936 on the last Sunday of September. Hyde-Smith first introduced the Gold Star Families Remembrance Week resolution in 2018, establishing the first formal national recognition of the sacrifices of families of the fallen; she and Warnock have introduced it jointly since 2021.
