Southern Miss’ Kobi Albert named Sun Belt defensive player of the week

Kobi Albert was named the Sun Belt Conference defensive player of the week after intercepting Alcorn State three times in Southern Miss’ season-opening 49-3 victory, the conference said.

The redshirt junior intercepted Alcorn State quarterback Jaylon Tolbert three times and recorded a tackle, Southern Miss said. The Golden Eagles’ defense held Alcorn State to 223 yards of total offense, the fewest the school has allowed since 2021, Southern Miss added.

The performance marked Albert’s first career interceptions since his high school days in Birmingham, Ala., Southern Miss said. The school also noted Albert had recorded seven tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, during previous stops at Kentucky, Mississippi State and UConn but had not recorded a college interception. It was the second consecutive season a Southern Miss player had three interceptions in a game; Joshua Moten did so Nov. 8, 2025, against Arkansas State, the school said.

The Sun Belt also named Coastal Carolina quarterback Deuce Bailey its offensive player of the week and Louisiana Tech return specialist Dedrick Latulas its special teams player of the week, the conference said.
