Southern Miss opened Blake Anderson’s era with a 49-3 victory over Alcorn State on Saturday at Renasant Stadium, the box score shows. Defensive back Kobi Albert had three interceptions to create scoring opportunities for the Golden Eagles.
Alcorn State scored first after intercepting Southern Miss starter Ethan Hampton, but the Golden Eagles answered on the next drive when Steven Robinson ran for a two-yard touchdown, the box score shows. Southern Miss announced Friday that Hampton, a Northern Illinois transfer, would start the season opener.
Robinson finished with 123 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries, the box score shows, making him the first Southern Miss running back to score three times in a game since 2020. Jamarice Wilder added 90 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, and Southern Miss brought in reserves in the fourth quarter.
Hampton was 13 of 23 for 180 yards with a touchdown and an interception in his first start, the box score shows. His touchdown came on a run-pass option that resulted in a 38-yard completion to Mario Sanders, who had six receptions for 94 yards.
Alcorn State managed 223 yards and 11 first downs and lost the ball five times, while Southern Miss totaled 543 yards and 32 first downs with one turnover, the box score shows. Southern Miss visits Auburn on Sept. 12; Alcorn State hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff the same day.
