Southern Miss Sweeps Series; Mississippi State, Ole Miss Fall Short in Conference Play
Southern Miss earned a sweep in conference play against Louisiana Monroe over the weekend. The No. 12 Golden Eagles won 2-1 in 11 innings on Friday, 3-1 on Saturday, and 7-3 on Sunday, despite struggling at the plate. Pitching was the key for Southern Miss, with Colby Allen, Camden Clark and Camden Sunstrom each earning wins and combining for dominant performances.
In Saturday’s game, Allen struck out seven in four scoreless innings to earn the victory. Clark fanned 15 in seven innings, allowing only one earned run. Sunstrom pitched six innings in the finale, giving up just four hits and one earned run. Senior Matthew Russo contributed offensively with five hits and two RBIs over the weekend, while Davis Gillespie had six hits for the Golden Eagles.
Mississippi State, ranked No. 10, fell short in a series at No. 4 Texas. Despite leading 5-0 in the final game, the Bulldogs were outscored 11-1 the rest of the way to lose 7-6. The series began with Texas winning 3-1, with Mississippi State striking out 19 times. The Bulldogs rallied in game two, winning 7-4 after breaking a 1-1 tie in the seventh and eighth innings. Bryce Chance led the team with five hits, including a grand slam in game three.
Ole Miss, ranked No. 17, lost a series to Arkansas for the sixth straight time. The Rebels dropped game one 12-2, but rebounded with an 11-4 win on Saturday. They fell 5-4 in the rubber match after Arkansas scored the winning run in the ninth. Ole Miss’s Austin Fawley had a strong series, with four hits, three home runs and three RBIs, while Judd Utermark tied the school’s all-time home run record of 48. Cade Townsend also earned a win on the mound, striking out five in 5.2 innings.
Next week, Southern Miss will skip midweek games and focus on a road series at James Madison. Mississippi State hosts Nicholls on Tuesday before welcoming No. 8 Auburn to Dudy Noble Field. Ole Miss has a midweek break before facing No. 7 Texas A&M at Swayze Field, according to sources.
