White Sox call up former Ole Miss shortstop Jacob Gonzalez after Murakami injury
The Chicago White Sox promoted infielder Jacob Gonzalez to the major leagues on May 30, the team announced, after Munetaka Murakami suffered a hamstring strain.
The White Sox, who selected Gonzalez in the first round of the 2023 draft, announced the move in a team statement and on Twitter, saying Gonzalez would be added to the big-league roster, the team said.
Gonzalez entered the call-up riding a hot streak in the minors. According to the Charlotte Knights, he batted .344 in May with 11 home runs, 36 runs batted in and 21 runs scored. The Knights reported he hit four home runs in his last three minor league games and had seven hits in his last eight plate appearances.
Over 52 games with Triple-A Charlotte in 2026, Gonzalez was hitting .317 with 19 homers, 62 RBI and a 1.087 OPS, the Knights said. The team added that those numbers were career highs in several categories before his promotion.
Gonzalez starred at Ole Miss over three seasons, hitting .319 with 40 home runs, 158 RBI and 186 runs in 186 games, according to Ole Miss. The school said he ranks among the program leaders in home runs, total bases, runs scored, RBI and walks. Ole Miss also noted Gonzalez was named D1Baseball Freshman of the Year in 2021 and earned All-SEC and ABCA All-South Region honors from 2021-23, and that he played for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team in 2021 and 2022.
