1931 Silver Lake church converted into 25-room Hotel Lucile

The 1931 Bethany Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood has been converted into Hotel Lucile, a 25-room boutique hotel with a courtyard cocktail pool that opened Sept. 14, 2026, according to a hotel news release shared with Fox News Digital.

Anthony Gutierrez, the hotel’s opening general manager, told Fox News Digital the restoration took about seven and a half years and focused on finding a new use for the building while maintaining elements from its time as a house of worship.

The release says many original features remain throughout the property, including stained-glass windows, wooden beams, high ceilings and steel-framed windows. The former chapel now serves as the hotel’s restaurant and dining room.

Gutierrez told Fox News Digital crews removed the chapel’s original wood flooring to install modern electrical and plumbing systems and add soundproofing for guest rooms, then put the flooring back in place. He estimated about 90% of the dining room space remains original.

The release notes the building previously operated as a church, later as a theater and as an antique market before the latest conversion. The property’s latest chapter includes an art collection with two large hand-painted murals in the former chapel; some works are part of a permanent collection and others are available for purchase, the release said.

The hotel also introduced modern touches, including an Erewhon-curated minibar and a roving martini cart, the release said. Gutierrez called parts of the restoration “painstaking” and said, “It was not an easy journey.”
