Benches clear at Fenway after Willson Contreras throws helmet at Nationals pitcher, Outkick reports

A benches-clearing brawl erupted Tuesday night at Fenway Park after Boston Red Sox catcher Willson Contreras threw his batting helmet at Washington Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli, Outkick reported.

Outkick said the incident began in the fourth inning when Cavalli struck out a frustrated Contreras and told him to “sit down.” The report said Contreras charged the mound, prompting players from both dugouts and bullpens to pour onto the field.

Video of the confrontation, Outkick said, shows Contreras leaping and hurling his helmet at Cavalli. Umpires issued multiple ejections, the report said, with Contreras tossed immediately. Outkick identified other ejections as including Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton, interim manager Chad Tracy and Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas.

Outkick noted the outburst followed Contreras’ ejection the previous night after a check-swing strikeout. The report also said Contreras had become emotional the day before while discussing the deadly earthquakes in his native Venezuela, and that the back-to-back ejections capped a turbulent 48-hour stretch for the player.
