Melat Kiros, a democratic socialist and former attorney, defeated incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado’s Democratic primary for a Denver-based House seat, according to election results announced Tuesday.
The upset is expected to energize Republican campaigns while raising concerns among House Democratic leaders ahead of the November election. Kiros’s victory signals a shift within Colorado’s Democratic electorate, favoring more progressive candidates.
Kiros, who was previously fired from her job for writing a letter criticizing certain political ideas, campaigned on a platform of progressive policies and reform. Her win adds to a series of victories by far-left candidates across the country, reflecting a broader trend within the Democratic Party.
DeGette, who has served in Congress since 1997, was seen as a moderate voice in the party. The race drew national attention as Democrats assess the potential impact of more progressive challengers on their general election prospects.
